Paddlefest at CIWW – Emma and Sophie

Paddlefest 2011
Having been woken up extra early we headed off to Paddlefest at Cardiff International White Water centre. After the hour and a half of travelling we arrived and already many paddlers were having fun on the white water course. However the fun didn’t stop off the course as there were many stalls like Dagger, Big Dog and Robson Paddles willing for you to try their demo equipment as well as a time trials on stand up paddle boards. There were also some free drinks available from Monster too.

Later on there were many races which included the Dirty Dog Demolition Duckie Derby, the Palm 4X Challenge and finally some raft races which included the current GB team.

The whole day was really entertaining for the whole family whether you like white water or not and I would thoroughly recommend fellow paddlers to go and visit next year. :-D  Sophie.

CIWW Saturday 3rd September
After an early start and a good drive to Cardiff, we arrived at the course rearing to go on the 4 cumecs water. Wendy and I got all kitted up, registered and then headed down to the beach area to get on the water. Soon we were heading up the conveyor belt to the top of the course, and after a short paddle round the corner we were ready to go.

On our first and second runs Wendy went for a couple of swims and also rolled twice. On the second drop I was pulled back into the wave and capsized. I lost my paddle, successfully hand rolled and then retrieved my paddle to continue the course.

At about five to ten we headed for our third and final run and as we reached the top the roar of water seemed to be louder. We decided to go straight down as we thought it had been increased to 6 cumecs. Unfortunately Wendy took a swim after being knocked off her line.

The course was very enjoyable and our hearts were beating very fast a lot of the time. It was a great adrenaline rush and we felt fantastic afterwards. We were soon back on the water demo-ing many different playboats and paddles. 8-)  Emma
