Wychavon Kayak and Canoe Club operate on a beautiful part of the River Avon in Worcestershire. The river at Pershore gets a lot of River traffic and the banks are used heavily by walkers and fishermen. So litter can detract from its beauty.
Spurred on by a successful litter pick earlier this year 10 volunteers spent a morning removing litter and debris.
4 boats travelled up the banks to pull litter out of the reeds and branches. We were happy to see the volume of litter was considerably lower than last time, suggesting we are getting on top of this problem. Nevertheless we had 4 big bags of rubbish from the 400 yards up and downstream of our clubhouse.
Another party remained at our pontoon. This is where we get in and out of boats. Often we have rescues and swimmers in this part of the river. We are keen to keep it clear of dangerous debris. Last time we pulled out 2 shopping trollies so we were surprised to find 3 further trollies, and oven and several yards of cabling. We know there is more down there but we will return!
WKCC always cared deeply about the river but this initiative has really made us focus on how we can improve it. On our club nights we’re starting to pick up rubbish – its just what we do now.
